Thank you for joining us today as we continue our sermon series, What We Believe, by looking at Questions 17 and 18 of the New City Catechism. Why do we fall short of God’s good law? How does idolatry reveal the ways we try to replace God with lesser things? And how does Christ’s saving work transform the way we live each day? We will explore these questions in today's message "What is Idolatry?" Brought by our Lead Pastor Stefan Bomberger.
WHAT IS IDOLATRY?
1. The Exchange of Idolatry (Romans 1:21, 25)
2. The Punishment for Idolatry (Ephesians 5:5-6)
3. The Rescue from Idolatry (1 Thessalonians 1:9-10)
Question 17: What is idolatry?
Answer: Idolatry is trusting in created things rather than the Creator for our hope and happiness, significance and security (WCF 2.2; 21.1–2; 22.1; WSC 46–48; WLC 105–106).
Question 18: Will God allow our disobedience and idolatry to go unpunished?
Answer: No, God is righteously angry with our sins and will punish them both in this life and in the life to come (WCF 5.5–6; 6.6; 33.1–2; WSC 19; 84–85; WLC 28–29; 152).
